The benefits of automatic plant watering

Having an automatic plant watering system means you can relax no matter how many miles from your beloved plants you are.

Even the most dedicated gardener needs a holiday occasionally to escape from the pressures and strains of everyday life both at work and home.

However, planning your much-needed holiday can be a fairly stressful experience in itself. Chances are that you’ll have been so busy checking that you’ve organised your passport, your plane tickets and your pets’ accommodation, that you could very easily overlook the welfare of your precious plants!

Whether they are growing indoors or out, in your front room or in your front border, your house or garden plants will need a regular supply of water – and possibly liquid feed or fertiliser – to remain healthy. With an automatic plant watering system, you can have complete confidence that your plants will be well looked after in your absence.

Water automatically for prolific fruit and veg

Fruit and vegetable plants – such as strawberry, tomato and potato plants – generally require more water than other plants. The majority of types of fruit and veg have a high water content and thus to ensure bumper crops, they need their full share of H20, especially during the period when they are bulking out.

When irrigation is irregular or non-existent, a variety of problems can result. In the case of potatoes, for example, the yield may be considerably reduced if the plants do not receive sufficient water during the time when the tubers are swelling and growing.

Another watering-related problem that can occur is the appearance of unsightly growth cracks, which make the tubers difficult to peel.  This occurs if the plants are watered suddenly after a period of relative drought. By controlling the irrigation of your plants, you can avoid such issues.

Automatic plant watering – perfect for polytunnels

The advent of polytunnels has undoubtedly revolutionised the growing of fruit, vegetables and flowers in the UK. These plastic greenhouses are easier to erect and maintain than the traditional glass greenhouse, and are generally less expensive.

Thanks to the protective polythene wall of the polytunnel, plants are spared the worst of the winter’s vicious frosts. This means that inside the protected environment of the tunnel the cumulative air temperature or “T sum” (used to calculate the optimum sowing time) is reached earlier in the season, with the result that crops can be sown and also harvested sooner.

Automatic plant watering systems lend themselves perfectly to being used in polytunnels. A variety of different irrigators are available to growers – ranging from slow-drip perforated hosepipes to sophisticated timing systems which control the amount of water given and the period of time during which it is administered.

Water your polytunnel automatically and you’ll never need to give your plants a second thought as you laze on that tropical beach…
